Browning A5 - The Original Semi-Automatic

This was the last piece I completed in this collection and for a reason. Guns have become a huge point of political focus in the past few years. But I am not here to talk about politics. I wanted to paint this gun to tell a story. The Browning A5 was the first semi-automatic shotgun. This was a huge milestone in the hunting world. It allowed hunters to cycle five rounds without reloading. This gave hunters a huge advantage during the early 1900s. More shots allowed for a better chance for a hunter to bring food home to his family. This shotgun was the reason many family’s survived during the hard times of the Great Depression. Without this revolutionary and graceful firearm, many of us would not be here today. Hunting is not just a sport, it is a lifestyle and culture. You learn about the land, the animals, and the history behind it. I feel as a culture now, we can easily take for granted the natural gifts that God has given us. My husband and I feel very fortunate to appreciate and know exactly where the food on our table is coming from. In return, we do everything we can to have an understanding and give back to our local natural resources.
A few more notes about the beautiful design of the Browning A5. It is most well known for it’s “hump back” design. It allowed the shooter to look straight down the top of the barrel, significantly improving accuracy while hunting for wild game. My husband is lucky to own one of these special guns, so I was able to paint it in still life. A special handling note from my husband: DO NOT touch the metal.
